The Making of 'Innerspace Adventures Through the Human Body'

The Art of Inner Space Adventures Through the Human Body
Sorry for the delayed upload, I've been battling with Scribd for a while now and this is the first time its actually managed to upload successfully.

Commission: 'Innerspace Adventures Through the Human Body!' Final Animation

I made it! I'm pretty happy with how everything has turned out, although there are aspects I will have to go back and revise after the crit (notably, there are no scrolling buildings in any shots other than the side on ones, simply because I didn't have the time to figure out how to skew the perspective in After Effects). Other than these hiccups though, I'm pretty happy with what I've achieved here (even if it is unrefined).

Commission: Animation Progress 23/5/12

This is the current progress of my animation, with a couple of scenes missing (notably, the Cell Division After Effects sequence, which makes up an entire minute of the animation). I've tweaked most of the shots in After Effects, although I want to do a lot more with them if I have the time before the crit. I'm going to focus on putting the shots and sounds together before I attempt to alter anything in After Effects, so at least I have a complete and viewable animation that puts the point across clearly.

Commission: UV Mapping

Here are the main elements of the animation UV mapped. I've got a couple of smaller bits left to model etc, but I've got enough to texture and animate now.

Commission: Final Cell Models and Police Station Exterior

Here are the final, untextured models that will be used in my final animation. I've still got to sort the Police Station interior and a couple of other smaller elements and everything needs a bit of a tidy up, stray polygons etc, but other than that, everything model-wise is pretty much sorted. Next step, mapping and texturing!

Commission: The First Few Seconds of My After Effects Sequence

The first few seconds of my Mitosis After Effects sequence. I've played around with expressions in order to make the various components jiggle and float, and I'm currently pre-composing each component with its set movements so that I can simply move the pieces into place, retaining their properties and keeping my work area a little tidier.

I couldn't have asked for better!

Commission: Bacteria Modelling Progress 15/5/12

Here is the start of my Bacteria model. Being that it is the 'enemy' in this scenario and the opposite to the White Blood Cell 'police car', I've loosely modelled it off of Bonnie and Clyde's 'Death Car', with a space-age spin.

Commission: Background Scenery Motion Test

Just a quick test to try and work out how the buildings will react with one another when in motion. Further away from the camera, slower transition across the screen and vice versa.

Commission: Background Scenery

I've created some basic Googie-inspired buildings to fit in the background of my animation, to save me time modelling each and every one. I've designed them so that they can fit together in a variety of different ways, providing the illusion that the city is made up of tons of different buildings (an example of the buildings fitting together can be seen in the top-centre). I intend to animate them in After Effects, moving them past the screen in order to give the impression that the Cells are rushing past. I can place them in 3D space and give them a bit of depth and parallax with the movement too, which should hopefully make them a little more convincing. They're very simple in appearance, but that fits with the overall aesthetic of the world I'm creating, plus, they're going to be rushing past fairly rapidly, so detail isn't a huge concern.

Commission: White Blood Cell Modelling Progress 12/5/12

Just a bit of progress on the modelling of the White Blood Cell. I've put down the basic geometry of the main body, although it needs a fair bit of tweaking all over, plus edges need to be bevelled and small elements put into place. The modelling should be sorted by tomorrow evening, after which I will move on to modelling the Bacteria and Red Blood Cells (given that they've got a very basic construction, they shouldn't take too long to model).

Commission: Refined Elements for After Effects Sequence

These are the refined elements for the Mitotis sequence in my animation. As this will be purely After Effects based, I've created simple vectors that resemble the initial designs in my storyboard. The elements will be animated in a dynamic fashion, but sticking to the fairly minimalist feel. Nothing too over the top, but still playing to the quirky appearance. Below are a couple of previews of how these elements will be used in my final animation.

Commission: White Blood Cell Orthographic

This is a quick orthographic of the White Blood Cell that I'm going to base the model off of in Maya. Its not spectacularly complex but I don't want to over complicate things. I enjoyed jumping back into AutoCAD after a year or so of not using it and I hope to continue with technical drawing in the future, whenever I can.

Commission: Pitch Presentation

Pitch Presentation

Commission: Refined and Updated Storyboard

EXT. Bloodstream
"This bustling highway is the human bloodstream, the regular route of travel for many Cells, specifically, Red and White Blood Cells."

"Every so often, there are trespassers in the bloodstream and this is where White Blood Cells come in handy."

INT. Bone Marrow 'Police Station'

"White Blood Cells start of as Hematopoietic Cells in the Bone Marrow."

"These Hematopoietic Cells grow and mature to become White Blood Cells."

"The next step is Mitosis, where the White Blood Cell divides and increases its numbers in order to tackle bigger threats."
INT. White Blood Cell
"Mitosis takes place over several phases."

"First of all is the Prophase, where the chromosomes coil up and condense. This makes them shorter and thicker, and the nuclear envelope containing them is broken down. The separate copies of a single chromosome are known as sister chromatids. Spindle fibres are formed whilst centrioles move to either end of the Cell."

"The next step is the Metaphase. The chromosomes line up in the centre of the Cell. Microtubules formed during the Prophase attach to the sister chromatids."

"The sister chromatids begin to separate, this is the beginning of the Anaphase. The sister chromatids are held together by the centromere, which begins to divide as each sister chromatid, moves down its spindle fibre."

"The final step is the Telophase, in which the two now separate groups of chromosomes reach opposite sides of the Cell."

"Both groups gain a new nuclear envelope and the chromosomes uncoil."
INT. Bone Marrow 'Police Station'
"The division is finalised through a process known as Cytokinesis, where the cytoplasm and organelles divide. The completed processes of Mitosis and Cytokinesis result in two separate cells that are genetically identical, known as daughter cells."
EXT. Bloodstream
"These daughter cells are free to duplicate further before they go on to fulfil their specified tasks."
