Shapeshifters Written Assignment
This essay will be investigating the conflictions and issues
established in the aftermath of metamorphosis on an emotional level. Essentially, it will be looking further into themes of social isolation displayed in films
such as La Belle et La Bete (1946) and
The Fly (1958), as well as
investigating how these themes have translated into modern day productions. In
terms of a modern example, it will also be analyzing the idea of the Symbiote in the Spider-Man universe, more specifically,
its effects on it’s host from and audience and supporting character
perspective.

Hey Steven, remember you don't want your essay to be in first person so you might want to reword it again before Phil gets a chance to look at it :)
ReplyDeleteoh, oops. thanks emma haha
ReplyDeleteHey Steve :D
ReplyDeleteOkay - I've re-jigged your intro here in an attempt to demonstrate some stylistic stuff. Firstly, you need to specify in what context you're investigating metamorphosis (i.e. in religion, in theatre, in literature...). Your opening statement seems overly complex to me - it's clear to your reader that, if you're dealing with the theme of social isolation, then you'll be dealing with the effects of metamorphosis on an 'emotional level'. You don't yet have any published sources etc. in support of your argument, and that's a problem because your assignment needs to be evidenced-based. You appear to suggest that you'll be looking at modern day examples of films that deal with metamorphosis (apart from Spiderman - if so, then say so. Structurally, you need to outline the order of points raised or territories explored - your intro is both mission statement and roadmap. It is not uncommon to rewrite the introduction after you've finished the essay, as sometimes the writing of the assignment actually reveals the proper crux of the argument. More generally, you need to put your film titles in italics and give the director's full name (the first time you introduce the film).
This essay discusses animal-to-human metamorphosis in film, with particular regard to the ways in which therianthropy is used to communicate and investigate the theme of social isolation. Films under discussion are John Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bete (1946), Kurt Neumann’s The Fly (1958), and Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 3 (2007). Research sources include (give books/articles etc. and give your reason for using them. Then you need to outline your discussion, for example:) The discussion begins by comparing the symbolic use of metamorphosis in La Belle et La Bete and The Fly, before examining the associated idea of the Symbiote in the Spider-Man universe. In conclusion, the assignment will…
